Thoughts on Veganism

Ah, veganism.  I have touched briefly on the topic in my FAQ's.  I have been a strict vegetarian for almost 12 years.  Wow, sometimes I am even amazed at how long that really is.  Also I am amazed at how old I am getting, with my 23rd birthday around the corner.  I gave up meat at 11 years old and have never eaten meat since (aside from a few mess-ups back when I was first figuring it out).  It has been the best decision I have ever made. Sometimes I just think about how happy being a vegetarian makes me.  Lately, however, I have been thinking about veganism.  That is a scary word to me.  I respect vegans more than almost anyone else.  It amazes me how much will power and commitment a human being can have, I sometimes strive to be like that.  When people would say to me "I would give up meat but I love it too much," I would say they lack will power.  But now I find myself hypocritical. I would be a vegan...but I love milk and egg products too much.

That's a lie.  I hate milk, it makes me sick, and eggs really creep me out.  But what do eggs and milk help create? Cake, bread, pasta, pie, ice cream, even so many of my favorite meat substitutes that I don't know where I would be without them.  As a New Yorker I live for bagels with cream cheese and real New York Pizza.  At what point does my happiness out way a life, the life of an animal?  I have been feeling that I need to practice what I preach. How can I tell people that meat is not as important as a life, when I eat cheese? With out the cheese industry, there would be no veal industry.

I have been on the fence about veganism lately. I want to do it SO BAD, I just don't know if I can.

Then I remember this "fad" that has been gaining popularity by perfect 4-person families, and girls that think they are models: Meatless Mondays. At first this made me laugh, kid of mocking vegetarianism.  As if to say "vegetarianism is great and all, but only worth 1/7th of my time."  However, thinking more, it is a great gateway.  Want to try something new? Baby steps. And I think I have come to that decision.  Meat-dairy-eggless Mondays, inst that a mouthful?

Who knows that the future might hold? Vegan Mondays might turn to vegan Monday through Friday.  I tell people all the time, just ONE vegetarian meal a week helps save lives, the same goes for veganism.  So here I come Vegan Mondays! Lets see where this takes me...

  1. I was literally just going to suggest you do a vegan meal once a week before I finished reading the first paragraph. I think it's a great idea and lets you test out the waters. You might find you love it, or that you hate it, or that one days a week is just perfect.

    Don't sacrifice your happiness (and love of ice cream!) just because you think you're being hypocritical. You definitely aren't! Besides, this blog is called "Simple. Easy. Vegetarian!" not Vegan. lol

    Good luck with whatever you choose! If you want to test cool vegan foods I'll do it with you!

  2. I don't think I could ever be vegan personally, but I admire the dedication it takes. I think starting with one day a week is a great idea :)

    1. it makes me feel better that another vegetarian can say "i could never be a vegan" i LOVE being a vegetarian but i felt like i wasnt doing a good enough job w/o cutting out dairy and eggs too. but im glad there are other vegetarians that feel veganism is really hard too!

  3. I have had the exact same struggle! For years, giving up meat was "just too hard". Now I feel the same way about making the switch to veganism. I have the added issue of a meat-eating husband. He has adjusted to meat-free living at home, but vegan living? That might be too much. I like your idea of cutting back. I have been pushing myself to eat more raw fruits and veggies, which leaves less room for dairy and eggs. I hope you continue to let us know how it's going!

    1. that's is one thing keeping me from committing 100% the first person i expressed all this to was my meat eating boyfriend. he told me he didnt want me to do it because it was hard enough finding places and things that we both eat, and it would be hard on us with even more restrictions. i was hurt because i felt this was selfish of him. hopefully just one day a week wont be too much for him (and for me as well). ill keep all you guys updated!

  4. Baby steps is the way to go if you're finding it hard. And you don't have to do it all at once either. It can be one thing at a time. Can't give up ice cream? Once upon a time, vegan ice cream was horrible, it's not anymore, there's plenty of brands out there that are very good. Same with cake, pie, cheese... Lots of great vegan cookbooks too nowadays. :-)

  5. Keep working on being vegan one or two days a week. Don't feel bad if you mess up, just do the best you can. But I suggest drawing the focus away from yourself, and putting it more towards the animals. Read more about what they suffer to provide eggs and cheese for people. The more you know, and the more you reflect on how your diet affects living, breathing, feeling animals, the easier it will be to eat according to your heart. And Chow Vegan is right, there's a vegan version for just about any animal product.
